To tacle the more challenging peaks of Gasienicowa Valley or Morskie Oko in winter requires a full array of mountaineering skills. This course aims to turn the dedicated hillwalker into a true mountaineer, combining practical instruction with ascents of many of the finest summits. Developing your winter skills on steeper snow and winter scrambling terrain, you will cover winter navigation, and avalanche evaluation alongside the emergency procedures of building a snow shelter and basic ropework for steep ground.

 

Previous  experience: summer climbing and a good level of fitness

Climbing in the Tatras offers rewards and challenges comparable with the best mountaineering anywhere in the world. From a revision of the basic skills, to more advanced skills for steeper ground, you will make rapid progress over this six day course. You'll discover all the ropework and climbing skills required to get your winter climbing started on a variety of theTatras finest routes.

 

You should bring the following mountain equipment: 

 

plastic/leather boots

rucksack

climbing helmet

crampons/technical ice axes 

harness

goretex jacket / trousers / thermal underwear

gaiters, goggles

mitts, finger gloves... etc.

 

OUTLINE PROGRAMME

 

Monday  (morning)

 

Arrive at “Murowaniec” Hut (the best could be arrive the day before). Meet the guides. Introductory talk by guides and assessment of weather and climbing conditions.

 

Basic instruction in use of ice equipment. Opportunity to practice ice axe self-arrest. Instruction in belaying on snow and ice, including placing ice screw and “deadman” protection. Includes assessment of slopes of weather and of avalanche conditions.

 

Tuesday 

 

  • Practise climbing on short single ice, snow and mixt pitch routes.
  • Climb of simple grade I/II route.

 

This day will also include instruction in navigation skills. Instruction in techniques of map and compass use in winter hills.

 

Wednesday 

 

Ascent of longer grade II/III route.

  • rescue techniques

Thursday 

  • A climb one of the summits surrounding Gasienicowa Valley 

Friday 

  • Rest day

Saturday

 

By the end of the course you'll be better prepared to lead confidently and safely. All the time our expert instructors will be coaching your practical skills as well as your mentakl approach.

Sunday

 

Another full climbing day.
